Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an evidence-based trauma therapy that helps people process and reduce the distress associated with traumatic memories by guiding them to attend to those memories while receiving bilateral stimulation through a mode that works best for you, such as the side-to-side eye movements, taps or tones. Together we can identify a target memory, the negative beliefs and emotions tied to it, and a preferred positive belief. During EMDR, we will work on bilateral stimlulation using the modes identified above while the you, the client, focuses on the memory and associated sensations. This process can expose and desensitize intense emotional responses, weaken the link between the trauma and maladaptive beliefs or bodily reactions, and allow the memory to be integrated into a more adaptive narrative so it feels less intrusive and triggering in daily life. EMDR can be done both through telehealth and in-person, however, in-person is recommended to manage any dissociation (commonly related to trauma) and utilize grounding skills in a more attuned environment.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a focused, somatic-based therapy that helps clients access and process deep emotional and physiological distress by identifying visual gaze positions identified as “brainspots” that correlate with areas of stored trauma or emotional intensity. During a session, the therapist guides the client’s eye position while tracking bodily sensations and subtle cues, using the chosen brainspot as a pointer to activate neural networks associated with the distressing memory; this activation allows the brain to reprocess and integrate the experience with support. Typically, brainspotting is used in therapy at Willow Path Counseling to slow down cognitions, get grounded again into the body, and increase mindfulness. Brainspotting can be delivered in person or via telehealth with modifications.
